Connecting Shropshire broadband update – 174 cabinets now live!

Related topics: Programme delivery

Ever since the first roadside cabinet went live in December 2013, Connecting Shropshire has been working hard to install fibre broadband. To date, 174 new roadside cabinets have been installed and are live in 43 exchange areas putting over 30,000 premises within reach of the new fibre broadband network.

This cabinet in Stoke St Milborough provides nearby premises with access to a fibre broadband connection

To see whether you have access to fibre broadband, use the checker at: http://connectingshropshire.co.uk/when-and-where/

The map allows you to get up-to-date information about the status of your exchange area. The availability checker enables you to enter their postcode or telephone number to find out your exchange area, whether or not fibre broadband is available and estimated dates for availability. For a list of all our live cabinets, see: http://connectingshropshire.co.uk/live-cabinets/

To connect to fibre broadband, people need to contact their chosen internet service provider to upgrade their broadband package, the broadband speeds won’t increase automatically.

Not all premises in an exchange area will get access to fibre broadband and not all premises served by a fibre cabinet will necessarily get access to faster broadband.

  1. Cabinet 3 in Ellesmere is in place but when is it expected to be connected to the fibre network please?

Whilst cabinet 3 in the Ellesmere exchange is already in place, it’s not expected to be connected to the fibre broadband network before the end of September 2015. Once it is live, you’ll be able to check availability with your chosen internet service provider.

  2. That final paragraph says it all.

Being 4.8Km from my soon-to-be-fibre-enabled cabinet (Ellesmere, Cabinet 2) makes the prospect of faster broadband for me and my neighbours very unlikely.

I will have to put up with my very unreliable 0.2 to 1.0Mbs broadband connection for a long time to come. As far as I can tell, Connecting Shropshire doesn’t seem to have any plans on how premises that are more than 1.5Km away from the cabinet will be upgraded.

I thought the entire BDUK tax payer subsidy to BT was to upgrade the broadband infrastructure to poorly served areas, but it doesn’t appear so.

Connecting Shropshire has a commitment to provide all premises in our programme area with access to at least 2mbps by the end of 2016 (where current connection speeds are less than 2mbps).
In addition, Connecting Shropshire is tendering for an extension to the current programme (phase 1), which would mean that we’d be able to provide faster broadband speeds to more homes and businesses. If this were to go ahead, your premises may benefit. However at this early stage, it’s important to stress that we cannot give assurances that your premises would benefit from a phase 2 and, even if they did, the work is not due to start until 2017.

      Many thanks for your query.
Our current expectation is that Ellesmere cabinet 6 will be fully commissioned by the end of July.
Once your cabinet is live, you’ll need to upgrade to a fibre broadband package with your chosen internet service provider.

      • H, same question for Cabinet 4 please? I see it has been installed now but no exciting sticker!

Whilst cabinet 4 in the Ellesmere exchange is already in place, it’s not expected to be connected to the fibre broadband network until the end of September 2015. Once it is live, you’ll be able to check availability with your chosen internet service provider.
